Free vs. Team features, the 10-engineer free-tier limit, and what happens when you cross it.

dev-optimizer has three plans: Free, Team, and Enterprise (sold separately, contact sales). Free and Team differ along two independent axes — which features are unlocked, and how many engineers your org can have before a payment method is required.

Feature access: Free vs. Team

The dashboard builder, anomaly detection, the query builder, and API/MCP access are Team-only features — this is true regardless of how many engineers your org has. A 3-person org on Free doesn't get the query builder any more than a 30-person org does; upgrading to Team unlocks these for any org size.

Everything else — every report, dashboard viewing, unlimited connected repos, unlimited read-only viewers — is available on Free with no engineer limit and no time restriction. See Report Library for the full list.

This feature split is separate from the 10-engineer limit below. An org can be under the limit and still need Team to unlock the query builder; an org over the limit is locked out of the whole app, features included, until it adds a payment method.

The 10-engineer free-tier limit

Free is free for orgs with 10 or fewer active contributors. An "active contributor" is a distinct person (not a bot, and not a login classified as an AI coding agent under Settings → Agent Identities) who authored a pull request, pushed a commit to one, or left a review, in the trailing 30 days. This is a rolling window, not an all-time headcount — someone who was active 45 days ago and hasn't touched a repo since doesn't count.

We recompute this count every few hours. It isn't your total invited member count or your GitHub org's total membership — only people showing up in recent PR/commit/review activity are counted.

What happens when you cross 10

  1. A banner appears in the app for everyone in the org, and an email goes to anyone with billing permissions, once your active-contributor count is confirmed over 10.
  2. You have a grace period (about two weeks) to add a payment method from Settings → Billing before anything is restricted.
  3. If the grace period lapses with no payment method, the whole app locks — every page redirects to Settings → Billing until a card is added. This isn't limited to the Team-only features above; it applies even if you were only ever using Free features.

Billing is whole-team, not incremental: once you're over 10, the entire team is billed per contributor — not just the contributors past the 10th. This matches how the limit works generally: it's a cliff, not a deduction.

If your active-contributor count drops back to 10 or fewer — a contractor rolls off, a team shrinks — the lock lifts and the banner clears automatically on the next recompute. Nothing about having crossed the line before follows you once you're back under it.

Adding a payment method

From Settings → Billing, anyone with billing permissions can add a payment method and start a subscription — either proactively (to unlock Team features early) or in response to the over-limit banner/lock. No card is required to use Free, and nothing is charged until you're actually over the 10-engineer limit.
